The use of cotton in today's clothing
Cotton, which comes from the Gossypium species of the Malvaceae family, is a soft fiber plant dominant in tropical and subtropical areas of the world; particularly in the Indian continent (India and Pakistan). It is a kind of a shrub plant usually made into cloth. It has an extensive 3-lobed leaves and seeds placed in shell or more commonly known as bolls. In the world of botany, the cotton plant belongs to the Magnoliophyta division Magnoliopsida class - Malvales order and Malvaceae family. Among the most cultured kinds of cotton include the G. hirsutum (also known as the upland cotton), G. barbadense (comprises the sea-island and American-Egyptian cotton), G. arboreum, and the G. herbaceum. The last two kinds are the foremost types of cotton in Asia. The history of cotton was dated a thousand years ago. World historians stated that the first use of cotton was traced back in ancient Egypt during the 12,000 BC. 7,000 years ago, cotton (mainly interwoven fibers of feathers and fur) was also excavated in many prehistoric Mexican caves. The primeval cottons of Peru and Mexico bears a great resemblance to those found in Egyptian tombs. Aside from Egypt, Mexico, and Peru, cotton was also cultivated in India and China long before the era of the New World. From India, the use of cotton has spread to other areas particularly in the Mediterranean countries. Africa, Eurasia, and the other countries of the Americas began farming cotton plants during the latter part of 16th century BC.
For some point during the 1st century, first-rate muslin (a cotton fabric originally made in Mosul, Iraq) and calico (one of Europe's most prized cotton fabric and was first manufactured in Calicut, India) was exported by early Arab traders to European countries especially in Italy and Spain. All throughout the 9th century AD, Moors pioneered Spain's cotton industry. In 14th century, fustians and dimities were produced in Venice and Milan, Italy. From then, England began importing cotton cloth in the early days of the 15th century. The East India Company then started exporting rare cotton fabrics from India during the 17th century.
At present, the world's top cotton producers are United Kingdom, Brazil, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Australia, Turkey, China, India, and the United States. In the US, the chief cotton makers are Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Louisiana.
